Saleh blames Nigerian engineers for failing industries

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Dec 2011

FORMER Secretary tothe Government ofthe Federation (SGF), Alhaji Aminu Saleh, has attributed the dwindling fortunes of industries in the country to the failure of Nigerian engineers to design, fabricate, construct, develop and maintain the machines used by the industries, even as he challenged them to play vital roles in their revitalisation.Speaking during the inauguration of Katagum Engineering Students Association in Azare, Bauchi State, the former SGF said most collapsed industries in Nigeria were due to lack of indigenous concept of translating designs.According to him, the country's economic fortunes largely depends on the vital role of engineers, noting that, "while countries like India boasts of 460 sugar refining industries, Nigeria is battling to maintain one."Speaking on the Fede-ral Government trans-formation agenda on agriculture, Alhaji Saleh advised that indigenous concept should be develo-ped to improve on seed application and cultiva-tion with simple mach-ines to reduce wastage and increase output.Reacting to Alhaji Saleh's challenge, the chairman of the state chapter of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mr Salihu Hameed, stated that Nigerian engineers as profes-sionals accepted the challenges threw at them, saying that they had vital roles to play in the development and progress of Nigeria. He, however, said that the collapse of industries in the country was a collective failure.
