Group calls for reconstruction of Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road

The people of Ilorin,the Kwara Statecapital have called on the Federal Government to reconstruct the Ilorin/Jebba/Mokwa highway for safety of lives of on the road.The people, through their association, the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IDEPU), made the call at the 46th Annual National Conference of the union, held at the Palace of the Emir of Ilorin.It is recalled that the same call was made by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar, at the second quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-religious Council (NIREC) in the North Central Zone, held in Ilorin on December 6.Abubakar had at the meeting, attended by President Goodluck Jonathan, called on the government to give reconstruction of the road a priority attention.The monarch, who noted that the road was the one that linked the South West with the Northern region of the country, said that in view of its importance, it should be considered for rehabilitation without delay.Chairman of the IEDPU, Saka Yusuf, a former Chief Judge of Kwara State who spoke on behalf of the union, urged the government to make the hitherto single carriage way a dual one.Yusuf, who noted that a lot of lives had been lost on the road that is regularly plied by both trucks and smaller vehicles, said the reconstruction of the road would reduce the spate of this unfortunate incidence.He also appealed to the government on the execution of the Oyo/Ogbomoso phase of the Ibadan/Ilorin highway which is delaying the completion of the high way which work started since year 2000.Yusuf lauded the decision of the state government to revive the General Hospital in the town, the site of which University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) occupied for many years before it relocated to its own recently.He, however, urged the government not to allow the revival of the hospital suffer delay because of the need of access of the people of the town to secondary health care services.
