Published by Guardian on Thu, 29 Dec 2011

TO MEET United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN-MDGs) on health care delivery services and polio eradication by the year 2015 in Yobe State, the state government has accorded topmost priority to the health care sector by completing the building and equipping of 12 Specialists and General Hospitals, including the 17 Comprehensive Healthcare Centres across the state. The Damaturu 200-bed capacity of hospital on Potiskum Road has already been completed, with the equipping and installations of hospital and medical facilities in the first quarter of next year. These were made known recently at the Government House, Damaturu, while Governor Ibrahim Gaidam was briefing reporters on the health care facilities visit to meet the UN-MDGs on health care delivery and polio eradication. He said that in complementing the efforts of United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on polio eradication and maternal and child mortally reductions, the state has adopted the full implementation of free health care services to children below the age of five and pregnant women in the state.Gaidam said: 'No parents or guardians should pay for the health care delivery services of their children and wards, including pregnant women from conception to deliveries in the labour rooms of our hospitals and clinic in the state.'He said that in compliance to the state's free health care delivery policy, he had established a joint monitoring and surveillance committee that would check the excesses of some doctors and other health workers on the free health care delivery for children and pregnant women.
