Cedec schools' edufair celebrates culture

Published by Guardian on Thu, 29 Dec 2011

TO ENSURE that its pupils imbibe their own cultural values and be proud of doing so, CEDEC International Group of schools recently organised an Edufair in Lagos.Parents that witnessed the event, seized the opportunity to inculcate some cultural values, such as the mode of dressing, importance of traditional attires and dance routines, which are often taken for granted. On why the school organised the fair, the Proprietress, Mrs. Ijeoma Unachukwu explained that what began as the school's cultural day eventually culminated into the fair due to some lapses the school management noticed. Her words: 'We run an exchange programme yearly with schools in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States, where we regularly take our pupils. But we realised that most of them (our pupils) easily adopted these foreign cultures, but could not share theirs with their counterparts. I then knew something was wrong.'I discovered that our pupils found it hard to greet in their local dialects, or name the state they come from. Even some of our teachers do not know some unique elements of their own cultures, when questions were posed to them. We had to do something about it and through the efforts of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we have been able to sell and incorporate the idea of saving the cultures of our country.'Speaking at the event the Chairman of the occassion, Mr. Obidi Aduaka said: 'Culture has become a rallying point for Nigeria's unity, and should be exploited to promote national integration. Nigeria is a country of cultural diversities. That is why I will continue to appreciate the former National Anthem, which states among other things: 'though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand.'He praised the National Assembly criminalising same sex marriage illegal, describing it as a good attempt to save the country from cultural decay and erosion of traditional values.
