Theway we are going, I predict that soon, adolescent boys and girls will occupy the White House; 10 Downing Street, and other Western seats of government to press home their demand forwait for itsexual liberties. Their argument would be that from about the age of 12 (sometimes less), the average human reproductive system becomes active. The hormones kick in, rushing through the pubescent anatomy in Tsunamic waves. The pubic vegetations begin to sprout. The cleavages erupt in females. Among boys, the voice breaks at about the same time that the phallus begins a massive expansion programme. Suddenly, members of the opposite sex become objects of fascination as nature prepares the youth for the work of perpetuating its speciesOur teenagers would argue that since nature empowers them so early, society has no right to delay their free and unhindered exercise of a perfectly natural function. They would argue that if God intended for humans to become sexually active only during adult life (and within the institution of marriage), then, He (God) would not have timed the estrogen and testosterone to begin their work at adolescence. They would conclude that social, cultural, moral and legal strictures against their sexuality fly in the face of natural law and amount to an infringement of their fundamental rights. And they would have a perfectly logical argument!I would love to see the look on the face of the US President, Barack Obama, when his adorable little girls join their placard-waving peers on the streets of Washington DC. It would be a logical extension of Americas growing social philosophy which sees nothing wrong with soldiers sleeping with animals and which seeks to defend the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals on grounds that nature made them so. Perhaps, then, Obama would realise the folly in his sexual libertarian agenda. Perhaps not; perhaps hell manage a straight face and accept his fate - in the name of modernity.Whatever the President does, I predict that a large army of parents would rise in counter-protest against the misguided youths. The adult army would argue that what seems right and logical may not always be right; that it would be wiser if the young ones reign in their loins, concentrate on their studies, finish school and get jobs before indulging their instincts. That way, they would be financially and emotionally ready to take responsibility for their actions and possible outcomes. Those with a religious leaning might add that sex outside marriage is a sin, a booby trap against the family institution and a source of reproach to the human society. A new phase of the sex war would have begunright inside the US.As everyone can see, the two sides have pretty solid points. But beyond logic and commonsense come wisdom. And you dont have to be gay to see that the latter point of view is superior and would serve society better long term. That is why I think that pro-gay activism has had too much airtime and should be put in its place.When you buy a car, it comes with an operating manual. Here, the manufacturer spells out the dos and donts as well as how to get the best from your expensive toy. You are told, for instance, when and how to change the engine oil and what technical specifications the oil must meet. In all my life, I have never heard of anyone who decided to use water in place of oil for the simple reason that water is more readily available, cheaper and/or more agreeable to his person. So, why must we go against the operating manual of all known human societies since time began that intercourse is best between consenting adult men and women in an exclusive relationship' Not between men and fellow men; or between women and fellow women; or between persons who have performed trans-gender operations; or between humans and animals.To be sure, Im no gay-hater. I fully sympathise with those caught up in this natures quagmire. In boarding school many years ago, I shared the same dormitory with a fully grown boy, complete with muscles and moustache, who nevertheless thought of himself as a girl. In his elements, he would dress up like a girl, wear make-up, even walk and talk like one. But I also saw a larger number of recreational gay boys who, in the absence of female company, turned to fellow boys when pressed by natures call. Many of these straightened up as they grew older. In-born or acquired, improper behaviour is measured by the degree of its deviation from the norm as defined by the majority of right thinking members of the society. Why must we glamorise a freak behaviour' Or contemplate turning deviant conduct into acceptable norms' All because it is attractive to a few who have access to the media and have influential lobbyists on their payroll' If we do so, we must be prepared to bring down other structures of society which draw a line between right and wrong conduct, acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. For instance, we must be prepared to condone drivers who decide to drive against traffic simply because it suits their fancy. I take the view that sex and sexuality are too important for the happiness and survival of the human species to be deregulated. I believe that President Obama and Capitol Hill are playing politics with gay rights, their calculation being that since a growing number of young American voters are drifting in that direction, it is in their enlightened best interest to either look the other way or join the bandwagon. This is tragic.
