A woman suspected of killing her husband is in police custody in Abuja. The woman, Hadezia, was alleged to have shot her husband, a former employee of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Ibrahim Abutu, with double-barelled gun at his residence in Wuse II, Abuja, on Wednesday. The deceased had married a new wife in Gombe last Saturday and was planning to visit Kaduna on a business trip before the sad incident.Abutus first wife, Hadezia, a mother of one, is being held by the FCT Police Command over the incident that has thrown the family into mourning.Though she maintained her innocence, claiming that she was in the bathroom when she heard the gunshot that killed her husband, family members alleged that Hadezia knew more than she said.Hadezia, an employee of the National Youth Service Corps, was said to have told the police that her husband was cleaning his gun when it accidentally went off and killed him.But a family member said Abutu informed his younger sibling, Obotu, a medical doctor, that it was his wife that shot him. The deceased reportedly revealed who shot him before he died at the National Hospital.Abutu was on his way to Kaduna in the morning, but he reportedly came back home to pick something he forgot. While at home, he was shot in the chest and was rushed to the National Hospital where he later died.An autopsy conducted on the body indicated that he was shot at point-blank range and the bullet hit his chest and broke three of his ribs. One of Abutus siblings, Ishotu, told PUNCH METRO that the suspect had given conflicting accounts of how her husband died.Ishotu said at first, Hadezia claimed she was in the bathroom, but she later said she was in the kitchen when her husband shot himself.Ishotu also alleged that the moment Hadezia learnt her husband had died, she left the hospital, went back to the house and allegedly cleaned up the crime scene. She said, We were all at the hospital praying that my brother would survive the attack. The moment we heard that Abutu had died, the wife simply went home and destroyed evidence at the crime scene to cover her tracks. She cleaned the blood and changed the curtains. She also hid the gun in the toilet. When challenged, she explained that she cleaned the blood on the floor because her son was playing with it. This cant be true because the son was with her younger sister in the house, and besides, she did not allow the police to record the crime scene before doing this.Ishotu stated that she had witnessed incessant quarrels between the couple during which the suspect would break things in the house in anger.Another surprising thing is that Hadezia had gone ahead to hire a lawyer when investigation has not even commenced, she said. When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed that Abutus widow is in custody, adding that investigation had commenced into the case.It is too early to say who did what, but we will get to the root of the matter and ensure that justice is done, he said.
