Ajibola carpets leaders over governance

Published by Punch on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

Former AttorneyGeneral of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola, has condemned what he termed the kid gloves with which Nigerian leaders handle the countrys affairs.According to him, the country is in a state of chaos and the government does not seem to be doing anything to improve the lot of the masses. He said, Im worried to see people in their pantomime dresses doing what they called carnival, when they should be thinking seriously of how to improve governance. Things are taken with levity and it is very sad.Ajibola spoke as chairman at the public presentation of former Ambassador Lamidi Malikis autobiography, The pick of the Bunch: Autobiography of a Nigerian Diplomat. The event was held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos on Thursday. He said the situation of the country called for serious attention, which was still lacking. We have passed through many turbulent situations before now. We had once had a situation where we virtually had no government, we had faced the Niger Delta militants and now we are faced with Boko Haram. The government must do something to stop this kind of hopelessness. Nigeria is a great nation of great people and things should not be the way they are, he said. The book is a narrative account of Malikis career as Nigerias ambassador for many years. The Editor of TheNews Magazine, Kunle Ajibade, who reviewed the book, noted that the book was a book of luminous remembrance of a journey through life.In his remarks, Maliki expressed happiness at what he called the fulfillment of an ambition. He said, I want to claim to be the happiest man in the world today because a long-standing ambition of putting pen to paper has been achieved. I am equally happy that this happened in my lifetime because I have always had the ambition to write but never had the time. The event was attended by notable personalities including past ambassadors, led by the President of the Association of Retired Ambassadors of Nigeria, Amb. Tayo Ogunsulire.Others were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan; former Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Ignatius Olisemeka; Amb. Olu Jolaosho; former Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Chief Yomi Oshikoya; and the Onipokia of Ipokiawhere Maliki hails from - Oba Raufu Adeole.
