PFN warns against disintegration

Published by Punch on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

The Secretary-General of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and General Overseer of Guiding Light Assembly, Pastor Wale Adefarasin, on Thursday said Nigeria needed to convene a national conference to avoid disintegration.Adefarasin, who spoke with journalists in Lagos, noted that the continued existence of Nigeria was being threatened by the insecurity in the country. He said, "I do not want Nigeria to break up, because Nigeria is a strong and powerful nation as it is. A broken Nigeria will be a weakened Nigeria."Each of the components will be weak nations. But if Nigeria is not going to break up, it is important for Nigerians to gather and discuss the basis for our unity."The government must call a national conference of various nationalities to discuss issues concerning the unity of this country. We have to discuss religion because Nigeria is a secular state, how to control our resources and so on."He condemned the Christmas Day bombing of St Theresas Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State by Boko Haram.Adefarasin called for the total overhauling of the nations security agencies, saying they currently appeared unfit to tackle the current security challenges in the country. The cleric also sought for the restoration of the old National Anthem, which, he said, dwelt on Nigerias unity in diversity. He said, "We need to restore the old National Anthem, especially now that the unity of Nigeria is in issue."He urged Christians to be vigilant during the Yuletide and be ready to defend themselves in the absence of protection by law enforcement agencies.Reacting to the Tuesday explosion at a Quaranic School in Sapele, Delta State, Adefarasin, warned Christians against attacking Muslims in retaliation to the attacks on Churches in the northern part of the country. He said, "Christians should not attack Muslims in retaliation. Boko Haram is responsible for the attacks. Muslims are not Boko Haram."
