Ondo Assembly asks Senate to declare senatorial seat vacant

Published by Tribune on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

The Ondo StateHouse of Assembly, on Thursday, asked the Senate to declare Ondo North senatorial district seat in the Senate vacant, following the defection of the occupier of the seat, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, from the Labour Party (LP) to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).The assembly enjoined the Senate President, Senator David Mark, to declare the seat vacant as Boroffice had dumped the party on which platform he got to the upper chamberApart from this, the assembly also passed a unanimous resolution asking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately conduct a bye-election into the vacant seat.Moving the motion to declare the Ondo North senatorial district seat vacant, the House of Assembly Majority Leader, Honourable Dayo Akinsoyinu, faulted the claim of the senator that he left the LP because there were factions in the party. He said his action was unconstitutional as there were laid down procedures for any lawmaker that wanted to defect from his party.According to him, Boroffice's action is unbecoming of a true democrat and a flagrant disobedience to Sections 109 and 68(3) of the 1999 Constitution.Seconding the motion, Honourable Fola Olasehinde, said the upper chamber should evoke the provisions of the constitution to deal with the matter. The members thereafter unanimously passed the motion and urged the Senate to declare the seat occupied by Boroffice vacant.
