Transporters urged not to raise fare

The Lagos StateCouncil of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has appealed to commercial drivers plying Lekki-Epe axis of the state not to jerk up transport fare so as not to compound the suffering of commuters, despite the effect of the newly introduced toll on the expressway.Transport operators in the area, in an attempt reduce the burden of toll on their operations, jerked up fares by 25 per cent, but the state Secretary of the council, Mr Akin James, appealed to them not to transfer the burden of the toll to their passengers.He appealed to the drivers in the area to see the new toll collection as part of their contribution and sacrifice to the progress and development of the state.He explained that the union, as a partner in progress with the state government, would continue to cooperate with the state government to achieve success in its determination to achieve mega city status for the state.He denied the rumor making the rounds that some people were trying to influence the drivers to increase fare to provide an opportunity for people to go on the streets to cause unrest.Community News learnt that the State Government summoned the transport operators from Epe-Lekki axis and the leadership of the state council of the union to a meeting in Alausa recently to deliberate on how to ensure peace in the area.
