Oyo youths charged on community development

Published by Tribune on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

YOUTHS in Oyo townhave been chargedto work together as a team to bring development to the ancient town and its environ. This was the consensus opinion of speakers at the 11th anniversary of Fecund Package, a youth association being promoted by young men in Oyo community, held on Boxing Day at the Atiba University Hall, Oyo.A member of the House of Representatives, representing Oyo Federal Constituency, Hon. Kamil Akinlabi, in his address as the chairman of the occasion, urged the youths present at the gathering to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Fecund Package to make the best of their career.Hon Akinlabi noted that the situation of youth unemployment in Nigeria today called for worry by all and charged government at various levels to do something fast to arrest the situation. His words, '' The situation in Nigeria today calls for worry by all and sundry, especially when one looks at the army of well educated but unemployed youths in different parts of the country. And if you see anybody in position of authority who tells you that he/she is not concerned, it is either the person is ignorant of happenings around the world or he/she is merely bluffing. Restlessness and agitation from youths, which essentially is a product of unemployment concerns all of us and if we want peace and stability, then government at various levels must be proactive, as well as do more to curtail the frightening trend.''Akinlabi also cautioned against fuel subsidy removal and the attempt by the FRSC to increase burden on Nigerian, through new vehicle number plates. The guest lecturer, Prof. Nurain Tanimowo, Dean, Faculty of Environment Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology who spoke on the topic, Empowering youths to break intergenerational poverty, urged the elders in the community to push up the young ones and charged the youths to aspire for excellence in whatever they do.He said to restore the lost glory of Oyo community, the people must chart a new course to move the community forward. Also present was the Oyo state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Yunus Akintunde who noted that virtually all indexes of growth were lacking in Oyo community. He challenged the senior citizens in the community to do more for the youths so that the community would not lag behind in the state.Other dignitaries at the event were the Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Oyo West Local Government, Mr Soji Ojuawo, Dr James Ojebode, who was the father of the day, among others.
