NURTW distances self from Agbor crisis

Published by Tribune on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

The leadership ofthe Ika Southchapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Delta State, has distanced itself from the recent violent crisis that rocked Agbor Metropolis in which one person was reportedly shot dead.In a statement in Agbor, the branch chairman of the union, Mr Amechi Igumbor, described media reports and insinuations linking the union with the crisis as false, unfounded, baseless and figment of the imagination of the authors.Comrade Igumbor said such report was not only misleading, but an outright misrepresentation of facts, as well as a calculated attempt to smear the image of the union, insisting that due to the weighty nature of the allegation, it had become imperative to straighting the records in the interest of posterity. He attributed the crisis that rocked Agbor metropolis on 22nd November, to the activities of rival cult groups which allegedly unleashed terror in the area with at least a member of the rival cult group also found dead.Mr Igumbor explained that media insinuations on the issue was premature and unfair, insisting that jumping into uninformed conclusion and opinion that could not be substantiated by verifiable facts was a negation of the principle of fair hearing and justice, moreso, when police investigations into the matter were still ongoing.Reflecting on the state of the union since he took over, Mr Igumbor said the erstwhile executive, which spent close to ten years in office, was dissolved by the Delta State government following security report which indicted the leadership.According to him, the disbanded chairman had since, being engaging in blackmail and campaign of calumny against the leadership of the union with a view to portray the union in bad light.Igumbor, however, assured the people that in spite of the present development, the union will continue to be guided by its constitution, particularly in the area of promoting peace and security, which is in tandem with the policy trust of the PDP led administration.
