The Police Show That Left Guitarist Andy Summers 'Devastated' But Blew Fans' Minds

Published by Huffington Post on Thu, 19 Mar 2015

He's a member of one of the biggest bands in the world, with hits like "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take," but The Police guitarist Andy Summers isn't immune to mortifying moments, and he shared a memorable one with HuffPost Live's Alyona Minkovski on Wednesday. It was during the band's Reunion Tour performance at Dodger Stadium -- a "huge moment," Summers explained -- when all his electric gear went out, reducing his notoriously soft but evocative electric guitar sound to a faint fizzle. "All these guys are on the side of the stage white-faced trying to fix this sound. Meanwhile, we got 60,000 people [screaming], and I can't get anything out of the guitar and no one can fix it," he said. After Sting went into his next song with just the bass, Summers put all the fuzzboxes on the pedal board on full volume. Summers described what happened next as "cosmic," and it left some fans saying it was one of his best shows, yet Summers was initially "devastated.""Usually I've got a very elegant, big, chorused, echoed, beautiful guitar sound, typical of The Police. But I played that whole show, you know, like this roaring fuzzbox sound," the guitarist said. "And, you know, it went down a storm. No one seemed to mind."A new documentary on the band, "Can't Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police," hits theaters March 20. Watch Summers recall that show and "ripping" magic mushrooms with John Belushi in the video above, and click here for the full interview with the famed guitarist.Sign up here for Live Today, HuffPost Live's new morning email that will let you know the newsmakers, celebrities and politicians joining us that day and give you the best clips from the day before!
