Topaz wins Atlantic Hall sports day despite Okwudili's solo runs

Published by Guardian on Fri, 30 Dec 2011

DESPITE being the fastest student in Atlantic Hall School, Elvis Okwudili could not boost his team's drive for victory at the just concluded inter-house sports competition held at the school's main stadium in Epe, Lagos. As the competition flourished and became intensive, attention was drawn to the ability, speed and strength of Okwudili, who represented Blue House (Sapphire). He single-handedly won for his house the 100 and 200 metres, and the relay boys' race but these were not enough to displace the eventual winner, Topaz (Yellow House). The SSS 3 pupil lamented: 'I have been looking forward to today but it wasn't easy at all for my team, as Topaz House was also fully prepared and cashed in on our weakness. I attribute my strength to a senior, Afeez, who trained me when I was in JSS 1. He was also the fastest then and has contributed a lot to what I am today.'Internationally, he considered Jamaican Usain Bolt as his role model, while hoping that he would grow to be fast like him and do Nigeria proud in the nearest future. But if sports does not work out as planned, he would be a software engineer.Okwudili's house came second with 16 gold, 10 sliver and 12 bronze medals behind Topaz, which won the 18th edition of the school's inter-house sports with 21 gold, 10 sliver and 12 bronze medals. Emerald (Green House) was third with 14 gold, 18 sliver and 16 bronze medals.Meanwhile, Okwudili wants governments to go to schools to scout for good athletes because he has seen and competed with so many students from other schools who can do the country proud.
