Alaibe dragged to court over alleged discrepancy in birth certificate

Published by Tribune on Wed, 30 Mar 2011

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP)  in Bayelsa State, Mr Timi Alaibe, has been dragged to court over an alleged discrepancy in his birth certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).Two petitioners, Honourable Michael Magbisa and BenafeghaTonkumoh, had in a suit before a Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa sought the disqualification of Alaibe as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, alleging that the birth certificate submitted to INEC bore Indu Alaibe while other document bore Ndutimi Alaibe. However, Alaibe has dismissed the claims of an alleged forgery by the petitioners, describing it as show of ignorance to Ijaw names and culture. According to him, the contested birth certificate was obtained in the Northern part of the country but added that the issue of falsification as raised in the suit was misplaced.Alaibe had in a statement signed by his Director of Publicity, Douye Diri, said the petitioners were ignorance of the Ijaw names, submitting that they have failed again. Are they not ashamed that they have shown their ignorance of Izon dialect These are spelt form of Indutimi, Undutimi and Ndutimi. The name means, he must stay alive. This is a drowning government and is using every means possible to suppress the wishes of the people of the Bayelsa people. They have failed and should be ashamed of themselves, he stated. The petitioners are seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC by itself or its servants, agents, privies from recognising, treating or accepting Alaibe as a candidate for the election to the office of  governor of Bayelsa State.
