...it's fight to the finish, Jonathan vows

Published by Punch on Sat, 31 Dec 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday vowed that his government would do everything legally possible to put an end to the activities of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram. The sect has claimed responsibility for the various bombings recorded in the country. He said he would not spare any effort aimed at fighting the sect, which he described as a group of evil-minded people, to the end.Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja while receiving the Deputy Prime Minister of Niger Republic, Mr. Mohame Bazoum, who paid him a condolence visit.Bazoum brought a condolence and solidarity message for the lives lost during the Christmas Day bombings on behalf of President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic.Jonathan said he was aware that the plan of the members of the sect was to cause a state of anarchy in the country, but that he would not fold his arms while they had a field day.Contrary to the position of the Christian Association of Nigeria that Christians are the targets of the sects onslaught, the President said both Muslims and Christians were victims of the explosions. He insisted that the issue was not a religious war, adding that no religion asks its followers to throw bombs to kill people they dont even know.He urged well-meaning individuals to join hands with his government in its concerted effort aimed at ending the violence in the land. The President called on neighbouring countries to cooperate with Nigeria in the effort to stop the crisis. The call, he explained, became necessary because the perpetrators pass through borders at will.He stressed the need for all countries to work together and ensure that there were no safe havens for terrorists in the sub-region.He thanked the Nigerien president for identifying with him and Nigerians during these trying times.Earlier, Bazoum told Jonathan that President Issoufou was concerned about the Christmas Day violence and loss of lives in the country.
