JAF, ASUU stage anti-subsidy removal rally

An Ibadan-based civil society organisation, Joint Action Front, on Friday embarked on an anti-subsidy removal campaign to sensitise members of the public on the need to rise against the Federal Governments planned action.The community mobilisation, which took place at the Polytechnic Road junction, Sango, Ibadan, Oyo State, comprised members of the Oyo State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and the Civil Society Organisation.The chairman of ASUU, UI branch, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, stated that the position of ASUU on the planned subsidy removal was clear and unambiguous.The union, according to him, is opposed to the move on the grounds that the decision would increase the burden of Nigerians and lead to civil unrest.The group embarked on distribution of newsletters highlighting reasons why the proposed subsidy removal must be rejected by the people.According to Ajiboye, the FG has consistently failed Nigerians in the provision of water, electricity, education, health services etc, which are being budgeted for.He claimed that inasmuch as the proposed deregulation of the oil sector was due to non-performance, the FG, which was coordinating national affairs, should also be privatised for optimum performance.
