2011: The good, bad...very, very ugly

As 2011 winds up today, Nigerians cannot but remember the events that shaped the year; some for good and many others, for ill. It is the year that the country's general election received wide acclaim locally and internationally. Yet, the selfsame election result stirred anger in some parts of the country, which was assuaged only by the blood of fellow citizens that were spilled for inexplicable reasons, EMMANUEL ENYINNAYA APPOLOS writes.National ElectionsAfter the controversial general election of 2007, Nigeria had a fresh breath in the 2011 polls. The exercise was described as largely free and fair by both local and international monitors. Before the elections, expectations were high from Nigerians, who at different fora, expressed displeasure with the previous exercises that paved the way for persons of questionable character to occupy public offices through which they embezzled state funds and inflicted hardship on the people.
