Chieftaincy Tussle Threatens Peace In Community

Published by Guardian on Sun, 01 Jan 2012

UNLESS Governor Martin Elechi intervenes in the current chieftaincy tussle in Ishiagu, Ivo council of Ebonyi State, the area may soon be enmeshed in a crisis.Dropping the hint during an SOS rally seeking Elechi's intervention at Ishiagu, members of the community alleged plots by some stakeholders to crown another traditional ruler contrary to wishes of elders and people of the community.Speaking to journalists, head of Ishiagu, Chief Moses Ngele, said the community, which consists of 20 villages, decided to express its bitterness and apprehension over the matter, warning that effort to thwart the people's decision would throw the community into deep turmoil.Ngele said the plots would not deter him, adding that it is wrong for some well-placed individuals to 'initiate illegal and unjustifiable propositions that would ultimately engender disunity and violence in the community.'While declaring that his reign as Agu III of Ishiagu Kingdom would promote peace and prosperity in the area, Ngele expressed optimism that he would survive plots of enemies of the community. The Chairman, Elders' Forum of Ishiagu Autonomous Community, Ubani Okoro, said: 'We have already crowned our Eze and nobody has the right to reinstall another person. He is Chief Moses U. O. Ngele, the Agu III of this community. We are here to prove to you that we are the ones that crown Ezes for this community and not those in government or youths of the land. We, the elders, are the ones who decide the next traditional ruler of this land. And as the custodians of tradition, we have already done that.
