Govt A Bad Manager, Says Obi

Published by Guardian on Sun, 01 Jan 2012

ANAMBRA State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, yesterday said government, at all levels, has shown significant lack of capacity to profitably manage businesses.Speaking in a radio programme with Rhythm FM, the Governor said if it were possible for him, he would have leased out all institutions owned by the state government to private firms and voluntary organisations to manage.Linking governments' poor business management capacity with the colossal funds available to them, he lamented that government functionaries had regrettably emphasised transaction rather than transformation. He attributed the same problem to the protest in some quarters over the hand over of schools to the missionaries wondering why some people do not view the action in the light of the fact that the missionaries were better educators, rather they mourning the fact that he was giving out N6 billion that could have been mismanaged by the public servants. The Governor, who earmarked N3 billion to support some voluntary hospitals to make them centres of excellence, explained the move as serving the people of the State.Obi also justified the removal of fuel subsidy insisting that it was better to do so and experience temporary setback and hardship than too postpone the evil day.According to him, retaining the subsidy on fuel would crash the economy. He said that the masses were right to be skeptical about what the Government would do with the money saved from subsidy removal in line with past experiences, but said that there was the need to monitor it closely and ensure proper utilisation. On the policy trust of his Government in 2012, he said that the gains of 2011 would be sustained, especially in the areas of security, industrialisation, job creation, education and youth empowerment.
