State of emergency: 'Jonathan's action is diversionary

Published by Tribune on Mon, 02 Jan 2012

The declaration ofemergency rulewithin four states, Plateau State inclusive, was received with mixed feelings at the weekend, as a member of the House of Representatives representating Jos East/Jos South, Honourable Bitrus Kaze, said the president's action was diversionary and at the same time was partial.President Goodluck Jonathan, on Saturday, had proclaimed a state of emergency in 15 local government areas covering Borno, Yobe, Plateau and Niger states as part of the measure to tackle the ranging insecurity in the Northern part of the country.Speaking with journalists in Jos over the declaration, Kaze, who was skeptical about the state of emergency, said the yardsticks used for the declaration were not clear to Nigerians, considering the severe insecurity in some states not touched by the President's declaration.'What is the yardstick' What about Kaduna where there had been several bombings and a factory for manufacturing bomb was discovered, talk of Bauchi where Boko-Haram was breed, and talk about Gombe and FCT. I don't know the yardstick but I know he dealt with the issue partially,' he asked. He said 'the Solution is justice, whenever anybody is caught in the act, he should be dealt with. You heard the Inspector General of Police saying they caught only the boys. Who are the men' The President ought to have critical examines activities of the service chiefs, what we need to address the upheavals on the Plateau is justice.'In his own reaction to the declaration of emergency rule in four local government areas in the state, the Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau Chapter, Reverend Philip Dafes, said the government would have brought out the white papers of all the previous Commission of Inquiries and implement them and punish anybody found guilty to serve as deterrent to others instead of declaration of emergency rule.Reverend Dafes warned that nobody should take the emergency rule as an advantage, adding that those who had since been advocating the total declaration of emergency rule in the state might want to look at it as a plus for them.
