Kano gives N1b loan to farmers

TO boost agriculture, the Kano State government has revitalised the state Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO).The state government has also disbursed the sum of N1 billion to 410 small and medium scale farmers under the commercial agricultural credit scheme.The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hajia Baraka Sani, disclosed this to journalists at the weekend.Sani defended the resolve by the state government to liaise with the Federal Government to revitalise the fertiliser plant, saying it was aimed at boosting food production and activities of agro-allied industries in Kano and its neighbouring states.Sani said one of the two lines of the fertiliser-blending plant had been put back into operation after eight years of abandonment, adding that the line had the capacity for producing 150 tonnes of compound fertiliser per day.'The second line has been inspected and the cost of repairs prepared by the experts that installed the machines and equipment from Denmark. It will be put to work as soon as possible', she said.She said when Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso came into office in May last year, 484 trucks of fertiliser were procured and delivered to the 484 wards in the state, adding that each small-scale farmer got between 50 and 60 per cent of his requirement at a highly subsidised rate under a cash-and-carry basis.
