Checking spate of bombings and killings

Published by Nigerian Compass on Mon, 02 Jan 2012

What an unbecoming era in Nigeria, when all efforts to fight insecurity and pandemonium defy all solutions, yet government seems to be comfortable. Have we pondered as a nation on how many innocent lives have been lost through incessant and brutal killings by Boko Haram' Do we realise that many people have been displaced from their places of abode' And many others only exist as foreigners in their homse for fear of being attacked by these pharaoic agents' They perpetrate their evils in different guises. Initially, their actions were hinged on claims that Western education is evil (Boko Haram). Later, they claimed it was due to the general elections which they alleged were rigged. And of recent, those of them arrested confessed they were recruited by certain bigwigs in government as political instruments. In any case, when things like these rear their ugly faces in a civilised society, should government fold its arm and watch while the brutality and sabotage continue' For how long will they continue to launch attack on innocent people when we have a functional government' Where are the government machineries to check insubordination and attack against the nation' Or if all these are coming from other nations against Nigeria, wouldn't government have declared war against them' Who are really behind these condemnable acts that are stronger than the Federal Government of Nigeria' Well, when injustices of this nature occur in other realms where lives of the citizens are precious to their leaders and such leaders are short of clues as to how to resolve it, they voluntarily quit office. They will rather resign than being allowed to be messed up. However, in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, leaders would still cling to power even though it is obvious that they have totally lost control of the ship they are meant to paddle. Otherwise, whose interest is President Goodluck Jonathan, alongside his adies, serving when the souls of those they took oath to defend are being massacred like Christmas fowls, only to keep on promising to find lasting solution. These are wounds that are difficult to heal, especially each time the families of those affected live to remember their loved ones. More so, when their death was not in any way connected with an accident, but deliberate wickedness of souls against fellow souls. When Nigeria is not at war, what could have caused these wanton killings of fellow citizens' In the word of Lord Russell: 'It is impossible that the whisper of a faction should prevail against the voice of a nation'. How on earth then could a group of people in the name of unpopular dogma hold the entire nation to ransom and government seems powerless except promise upon promise. Also, what roles have the traditional rulers and community leaders been playing on this issue' This is a big challenge for every head in Nigeria, whether government, traditional or religious. What efforts are the district heads making in their different jurisdictions where these crises are being perpetrated' Regrettably, things have stopped being the same since every motive for taking up positions of leadership is materially-inclined. The interests of subjects in their domains are no longer paramount to them but the goodies they get from government. Otherwise, how could all these crimes be planned and executed without volunteered reports to the security' Mind you, no amount of succour, promise or sympathy can bring back the lives of the affected citizens. More so, the way things are now, everybody is a potential victim. You should not wait till your relatives are affected before appropriate actions are taken.Government should therefore as a matter of urgency, and in the interest of oneness and unity, arrest these ugly situations, before the seeds of discord planted by these agents of disunity grow to become a full-blown anarchy. 'Mayowa lives in Bale Agbe Quarters, Oje Owode.
