AMID the festering goal drought currently plaguing the Super Eagles, the call for the recall of estranged striker and Blackburn Rovers' front man, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, got a decibel higher with former assistant coach of the team, Fatai Amao, lending his voice to it.He has also made a case for the recall of Sani Kaita, who has been left in the cold since he infamously brought down a Greek player at the World Cup and thereafter earned a red card. He has since been left out of the team.Aiyegbeni has never earned an invite to the team since he cleared a goal-bound ball off the South Korean goal line in the dying minutes of the match, in which the Eagles needed a win to move to the next stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.Yesterday, Goal.com named Aiyegbeni World Player of the Week. In arriving at the decision, the publication said, 'Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.'It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we nominate will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention.'However, Amao told The Guardian yesterday: 'If you are talking about recall or invite based on performance, I think Yakubu Aiyegbeni has done more than enough to earn it.'If you ask me, I would say he has performed more than those presently in the team because his present form now says it all. It is not easy to score five goals in a world-class league like the English Premiership.'As if to confirm the fact that Aiyegbeni has done enough to merit a recall and reinforced his reputation as a prolific marksman, Amao added: 'We watch the Premiership week-in week-out and if we must talk about recall based on performance, my personal opinion is that he should be recalled based on performance.'On Kaita, he said: 'The decision to recall Kaita depends on the gaffer since it was a disciplinary issue that ended up causing us the match.'But I would say, if Kaita is playing well, he should be brought back to the team because if we study the way other great footballing nations relate with their stars even when they have disciplinary issues, we will know that handlers of the Super Eagles are not doing the right thing by continually leaving Kaita out.'When Wayne Rooney had some disciplinary issues with the Three Lions and was given several match bans, the English FA went ahead to fight for the reduction. Any player in that team could have committed the type of blunder Kaita committed.'Secondly, so many players before him have earned red cards but were eventually brought back to the team. Though we accept that Kaita overreacted, all that should have been overtaken by events and the boy brought back to the team.
