Aminu seeks Jonathan's intervention in closure of Adamawa House

Published by Guardian on Tue, 03 Jan 2012

FORMER Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Prof. Jibril Aminu, has described the alleged closure of the Adamawa State House of Assembly by the Executive arm of government as a treasonable offence, gross abuse of power and a violation of the nation's Constitution. He, therefore, appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to quickly intervene in the crisis to avert a looming breakdown of law and order in the state. The former minister of petroleum feared that the Executive's action, if unchecked, could throw the state into avoidable chaos.Aminu told journalists in Yola, the state capital, yesterday that he was shocked that Jonathan was silent on the matter, asserting that state government's action was worse than the activities of the destructive Boko Haram sect.'We have a constitution that divides power among different tiers of government. The Executive arm has nothing to do with the running of the Legislature, yet everybody will tell you here that the Executive sent thugs and party supporters to disrupt the proceedings of the House. Thereafter, the police, under the Executive grip, locked up the House and members cannot get there. This is treason', he stated.Aminu said any governor, which descends to such demeaning level, should not be allowed to stay in office one more day. 'It's not right to desecrate the Legislature. If any person, whether the Speaker or anyone else is doing such a thing, they should be arrested and charged for treason. They have no right to do what is irresponsible, bizarre and shocking'.He said through this action, the Executive has rendered an important arm of government dysfunctional and queried: 'How can you have a House of Assembly that is not allowedto meet' It's treasonable and I am shocked that people who sit in Abuja and know what is happening whether in this state or any other state cannot do anything about it'.Aminu urged the President not to be indifferent to what is happening in the state, adding that he should move in to protect the Constitution as he had sworn to do with a view to restoring legislative functions in Adamawa and any other state where the House had been stopped from working.Last week, the impeached Speaker, Sadiq Ibrahim Dasin, filed a suit against his successor, Ahmad Umaru Fintir, the Deputy Speaker Kwamoti La'ori and the Assembly. In the suit before the Acting Chief Judge, Batimawus Lawi, Dasin and his deputy, Mrs. Wale Fwa, he urged the court to declare their sack illegal.
