Fuel subsidy removal: Prices of commodities increase

Less than 48 hoursafter the removalof subsidy on fuel, prices of commodities in the market have increased by about 20 to 50 per cent unannounced.Some market women who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune stated that 'we cannot do otherwise other than to increase the prices of our commodities so as to be able to meet up with the current situation in the country.According to them, 'when we left our various homes to come to the market, the transport fare increased by over 100 per cent and we have to ensure we placed whatever we sell on what we make on our own commodity'.Some of the commodities that had their prices increased are bread, garri, rice, grains, provisions and all edible products available in the market, while soaps and other toiletries increased by 10 to 25 per cent.A drive around Ibadan metropolis shows low patronage of buyers in the market, as many people decided to stay at home to study the situation of things before going out, apart from civil servants, bankers and some private business owners who went about their different businesses..
