Motorists jailed 45 days in Ibadan

A commercial driver,Mr Gbenga Okanlawon, has been sentenced to 45 days in prison for traffic offences by a Mobile Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.The driver, who was arrested by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oluyole Unit Command, was among the 34 erring motorists arrested during a special patrol in Ibadan to enforce traffic rules and regulations during the festivities period.He was arrested with Hummer Bus with registration number BR 432 GWA (Abuja) for non-compliance with the use of seat belt, dangerous driving and an attempt to kill a police officer on duty.Magistrate Ebeleoku Mustapher, in her ruling, ordered that the commercial driver be remanded in prison custody for 45 days for attempting to run down a police officer on duty.She also ordered that another commercial driver Jaiwesola Tunde, be detained at the Toll Gate police station for driving under the influence of alcohol.Arrested with a vehicle with registration number XK 06 EPE, he was accused of non-compliance with the use of seat belt and driving under the influence of alcohol.During the court sitting, 34 motorists were prosecuted, while 33 were convicted and one person discharged and acquitted.The motorists were arraigned for traffic offences which included overloading, non-use of seatbelt and non-availability of fire extinguisher, among others.Speaking on the special patrol, FRSC Oluyole unit Commander, Sanya Adeoye, disclosed that it was to ensure that motorists comply with traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety on the roads.He disclosed that sensitisation of the motorists had led to reduction of road crashes, especially on Lagos-Ibadan express road.
