Calabar South LG boss prioritises health, education

The chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Mr Ekeng Nsa Henshaw, has identified health and education as major priorities which his administration is addressing.Henshaw who received in his office during a visit, a delegation from the health department of Christ for the World Mission Church, told his visitors that some challenges in the two sectors of health and education had been captured in the budget of the local government council.He commended the church for seeing the need to support and partner with government in extending health care to the under-privileged in the suburbs, adding that his administration had since indentified the potentialities of government partnership with the church, to help maximise the result and targets during National Immunization Days (NIDs).According to him, the local government would help the church to encourage the citizenry and residents alike to participate fully in the week-long programme, which had within it, a three-day free medical services.'When a man's mind is sound, he or she is of good health and vice versa,' he added.The local council boss stressed that when the church partnered with the government in addressing the need for regular and proper medical check up by the people, the response would be of better result and the society would be better for it.Earlier, head of the medical department of the mission who led the delegation on the courtesy visit, Dr Aribo Ekpe, invited the chairman and his entire executive cabinet to be part of the week-long activities, including seminars, symposia and free medical services.Meanwhile, peeved by what he saw in some pri-mary schools within the local government area during a scheduled inspection, the chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Mr Ekeng Nsa Henshaw, has promised to take necessary steps to ensure the situation was redressed.The inspection tour of some primary schools led by the supervisor for education in the local government area, Mrs Joy Kusi, took the chairman to six schools, namely: Apostolic Primary School, Idang Street; Bishop King Memorial Primary School, Inyang Street; Emmanuel Church Primary School, Chambley Street; Redeemer Lutheran Primary School, Fosbery and Ironbar Memorial Primary School, Atu.Henshaw described as deplorable and frightful, the state of infrastructure in schools visited.At Apostolic Primary School, Idang Street, only one classroom block had reasonable number of writing desks for the pupils, while the rest had none.
