Unilorin announces postponement of WAUG

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 Jan 2012

THE West Africa Universities Games, (WAUG), scheduled to commence on Tuesday (January 11) at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State has been rescheduled. The Games will now hold in March.Announcing the postponement to journalists yesterday, the host and Vice Chancellor University of Ilorin, Professor Is'haq Oloyede, said the earlier scheduled date clashed with the Ghanaian Universities Games pointing out that WAUG could not hold without the participation of Ghana. The relevance of Ghana in the games, he said, was informed by the fact that both the country and Nigeria started the games in 1965, adding that the postponement had however been ratified by the executive committee of WAUG which met at the University of Ilorin on January 4.Giving the breakdown of the preparations for the games, Oloyede said a total sum of N442m had been spent on facilities: tartan tracks and field (N166m); renovation of old pavilion (N24m); renovation of indoor sports hall (N33m); construction of new pavilion (N71m); 59 seater A/C Marcopolo bus (N52m), synthetic floor and Athletics equipments (N45m); renovation of courts and new handball court. Also, there are four tennis, two basketball, two volleyball, and one handball (N35m); plastic chairs for old pavilion (N16m).He however said that the postponement might not also be unconnected with a nationwide strike actions to protest removal of petrol subsidy and its attendant hike in prices.
