HIV/AIDS: Soyinka charges govt on provision of good health care

The executive director of Nework on Ethics/Human Rights, Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention, Support  and Care (NELA), Professor Femi Soyinka, has called on government, stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to ensure that rights of people living with HIV/AIDS are well protected and provide them with good health care facilities.He said this, while speaking at the stakeholders forum with the theme Sharing Lessons, jointly sponsored by USAID, the American People and NELA Consortium AIDS Initiative in Nigeria (NECAIN), at A Three Hotel, Suites and Event Centre in Ibadan.Soyinka, who said over 200,000 people had been primary beneficiaries of his advocacy programmes in Nigeria, with secondary beneficiaries being members of their families, children, orphans and others, said it was Nigerias right to live in good health.He then called on practitioners in both the public and private sectors to support NECAINs efforts at reducing the scourge of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.We care for the life of the people, this is why we encourage others, especially government to focus attention on the protection of rights of these people and children living with HIV, Soyinka said.Also speaking at the programme, the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge, said HIV problems had no borders, so, everybody should be involved.Government of the country, including the local government authorities, non-governmental organisation and everybody should be involved in the fight against the spread of HIV/AiDS in the country, Alonge said.Consortium members of Network on Ethics/Human Rights, Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention, Support and Care (NELA), who also made presentations at the programme, include Society for Women and AIDS in Africa, Nigeria (SWAAN), Federation of Muslim Womens Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), and Civil Society for HIV/AIDS I Nigeria, North Central (CISHAN-NC).
