Mixed feelings trail repairs of UI-Agbowo expressway

Published by Tribune on Thu, 31 Mar 2011

Following the recent rehabilitation of the U.I - Agbowo express road that had suffered neglect for years, residents of the slummy area have heaved a sigh of relief, expressing their appreciation to the Ibadan North Local Government for coming  to their aid.An okada rider, who plies his trade on the route, expressed his joy over the repairs of the bad portions of the road but not without reservations. The youth, who  did not want his name mentioned, told Community News that the repairs was wishy-washy, adding that rain would soon confirm his claim. The road was badly patched just in the surface and may not stand the test of time when the rains  come. But they have not even finished the patching because from Transformer Bus Stop, nothing has been done, the young man observed, adding, however, that he was grateful for the belated gesture of the government.Another resident, Bukola Fakayejo,  who spoke with Community News, said the repaired road was manageable as of now since it was not graded, but only tarred. They only poured tar on the road, but never graded it to last long. We are not too happy with the way they did the job given the number of years the people had suffered while plying the route. If they really mean business, they should come and complete the job and maybe add another layer to make it durable, the masters student of the University of Ibadan stated.Another  resident ,who sells tomatoes and pepper by the roadside, told Community News that the perfunctory job the government came to do just few weeks to April elections was a sign that they have only come to bribe them with a Greek Gift.Dont mind them. The road had been bad for over 10 years and when they came into power in 2007, they  promised they would repair it but never did until two weeks to elections when they know that they would need our votes. Imagine a road of about half a kilometre  taking them over four years to fix, it is a shame! Mama Alata, who spoke in Yoruba, lamented, asking why people in government relish inflicting pains on their subjects.
