Rights groups pledge to join strike

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Jan 2012

AHEAD of today's planned industrial action against the removal of fuel subsidy, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CCSO) has expressed its willingness to join forces with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions to 'ensure a total shutdown of the country's economy'.Speaking in Lagos yesterday at a press conference by Save Nigeria Group (SNG), the CCSO's Spokesperson, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin stated that the strike is going to be a long one as the battle-line is drawn. The spokesperson described subsidy removal as 'living and thriving corruption process'.According to Okei-Odumakin, 'We shall shun our places of work and engage in the mother-of-all rallies from Monday 9th until this 'shame of the Black race' begins to think and do things beyond the call of filthy lucre'.The CCSO's spokesperson reminded the masses that 'oil is the substance, subsidy removal is the excuse. The strike is the process and taking Nigeria back from hijackers is the ultimate destination'.The group also made some phone numbers available in case anyone needs free legal and medical aid while the strike is on, the line are: 08095652271, 07098001361, 07098001362, (text only 08056908017, 018429918 and 08033235822.
