Published by Tribune on Wed, 11 Jan 2012

THE Comptroller-General of NigeriaImmigration Service (NIS), Mrs Rose Uzoma, has set in motion machinery for total enforcement of the presidential declaration of closure of borders. She has, accordingly, deployed her deputies to personally supervise the implementation of the state of emergency in the affected states with international borders.A statement in Abuja by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr Joachim Olumba, said all command operatives in states with international borders had been ordered to engage in 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of all border control posts and border patrol units to ensure total control of movement into and out of the country, to forestall the infiltration of the country by foreign elements during these trying times. The statement said Deputy Comptroller-General in-charge of Operations, Dr Babajide Brown, was deployed to oversee Borno State, while Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Investigations, Inspectorate and Enforcement, Mr Suleiman Umar, has been charged with the coordination of operations in Yobe State. Also, the Comptroller-General of Immigration has directed the immediate recall of all immigration officers and men on leave to their duty posts. The directive was to ensure that the service had the full strength of its manpower to confront the challenges posed by the current threat to national security, the consequent declaration of partial state of emergency in parts of the country and ongoing protests across the nation.Uzoma further said the decision to involve deputy comptrollers-general in the coordination and supervision of the implementation of the state of emergency was to ensure the full realisation of the objective of the Federal Government to achieve peace, stability and safety of lives and property in affected states, in particular and the country in general.
