THE ongoing nationwide strike over the removal of fuel subsidy has halted the kick off of the district finals of season three of the Lagos Guaranty Trust Bank Principal's Cup scheduled for last Tuesday and Wednesday. With most of the schools in Lagos under lock and key, twenty zonal champions will compete in their various districts for places in the state finals. Aside districts three and five, which have four teams, other districts like one, two, four and six will have three teams at the district finals. However, for the sponsor, GTBank, the tournament goes beyond football, but also serves as a veritable platform to mentor youths and encourage them to pursue their dreams with the introduction of Tournament Ambassador's Programme (TAP) and Camp GTBank. The General Manager, GTB Communications and External Affairs, Lola Odedina, disclosed that there has been conscious effort to restore the glory of the championship.Odedina said recently at a press briefing ahead of the kick-off of season three: 'The journey so far has been worthwhile and we sincerely appreciate Lagos State Government for the opportunity to partner them in bringing back the glory days of the Principal's Cup, and for its unwavering commitment towards the successful completion of two highly remarkable seasons.'According to the bank official, it was the passion for youth development and grassroots football that inspired the company's partnership in the competition. Aside the technical know-how of the Ministry of Education, this year's tourney will also involve the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development.
