How To Preserve Ojukwu's Legacy

Published by Guardian on Sat, 14 Jan 2012

NDIGBO in Australia yesterday implored their kinsmen to preserve the footsteps of late former Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu by insisting on the development and unity of the country. In a statement in Enugu, the group, under the aegis of Igbo Association of Victoria, Australia, said even in death, Ojukwu remains one of the greatest Igbo committed to the progress and unity of Nigeria, stressing that the situation of the country called for collective effort. The statement signed by its President Jammy Mmadubike and Mrs Urania Onah, Secretary, insisted that, it would amount to mocking Ojukwu should the Igbo participate in anything that could cause further friction in the already crisis-ridden Nigeria and asked the zone to tread with caution.Stressing that Ojukwu believed in himself, the group tasked Ndigbo to see themselves as agents of change and continue to play exemplary roles as demonstrated by their forebears.Igbo Association of Victoria, Australia said as much as Ojukwu loved his people and demonstrated so when he led the 30-month Biafran war, he would not be happy to be identified with any arrangement that could derail the peace and unity of the country.Explaining that Ndigbo was now confronted with one of the greatest challenges ever, the group said that nothing should be done to altar the plans to give Ojukwu a befitting burial, stressing that some of the disturbances in the country were intended to incite the zone into war.
