Keshi, Amokachi to cut back on Nations Cup TV work

Published by Guardian on Mon, 16 Jan 2012

NIGERIA'S coach, Stephen Keshi, and his assistant, Daniel Amokachi, are to cut back on their work as television pundits during the Africa Nations Cup, which has generated so much controversy.Keshi and Amokachi are due in South Africa as expert analysts for satellite television channel, Supersport, during the Nations Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. But rather than stay till the AFCON final on February 12 in Libreville, the coaches now plan to return to their duty post on February 6 in time to prepare a team for a friendly in Liberia.Officials have kicked against their television work, arguing that it is a distraction at a time they needed to be fully concentrating on building a new team for Nigeria, which failed to qualify for the tournament. An official told MTNFootball.com: 'Keshi would be busy preparing his team for a friendly against Liberia.'Except something else happens, I don't think there would be time for a pundit's job. I also would advise the coach that he peruses his contract properly and see if there is any such window to do such a job.'A friendly in Liberia for the country's team of domestic league players has been rearranged for February 15 in Monrovia and the Eagles coaches are expected to be on the ground to prepare the team. The training camp will re-open on February 6 and the Eagles team 'B' will depart for Liberia on February 13.Keshi, though, has maintained that he does not have any issue with his employers over his TV role. He told MTNFootball.com: 'The so-called controversy is a creation of the media.'I don't have any problem about the pundit's job whatsoever with the FA. They have not said anything was wrong with me and Amokachi doing analysis during the Nations Cup for Supersport.
