Ilamoye-Igede community decries transformer vandalism

Published by Tribune on Tue, 17 Jan 2012

The people of Ilamoye community in Igede, Irepodun Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have appealed to the authorities to repair their electricity transformer which has thrown the area into darkness for about three weeks.According to members of the community, the transformer had one of its components removed for repairs and after it was replaced, it was removed again for reasons the community said it could not decipher. It was gathered that the people of the community had earlier contributed about N200,000 with which the faulty component was purchased and the transformer became functional again.'When the part was brought and fixed, we began to enjoy electricity again until sometime around January 2 or 3 when the same component was stolen by vandals, thereby throwing the area into darkness again since then,' the source stated.Since early this month when the same component was removed by thieves, the people have been pointing accusing fingers at those they said 'must know about and work on transformer,' saying only professionals could possibly remove the component with the easy it was done.Members of the community who spoke with Community News wondered what would happen now after they had laboured to buy the component the first time, with one of them pointing out that 'our Honourable in Ado Ekiti even gave us N50,000 of the total sum when we were raising the fund for the purchase.'Speaking on the development, a resident of the area, Miss. Bukola Aregbesola, appealed to the Power Holding Company of Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to come to the aid of the community by finding a solution to the problem. Aregbesola also called on the security agencies to help them secure the facility to avoid further vandalism of the transformer.
