Protests: Federal Government deployed soldiers to stop failed politicians, says minister

THE Federal Government deployed soldiers on the streets of Lagos and other states yesterday to prevent 'failed politicians' from hijacking the protests over fuel subsidy withdrawal, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Boro, said yesterday.Speaking on a radio programme monitored in Lagos, Boro said the eight-day-old strike and protests, which ended yesterday, during which the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, Lagos, was swarmed by thousands of Lagosians in protest against the increase in the pump price of petrol from N65 to between N140 and N190, were almost hijacked by some 'failed politicians'.Although the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had called off the strike and street protests, stern-looking soldiers took over the park and other flash points in Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Kano and other states, as early as 6a.m. yesterday, preventing those who had planned to embark on street protests from doing so.
