ASUU, civil society groups defy NLC in Kano, protest on Zaria Road

Despite President Goodluck Jonathan's intervention in labour's weeklong strike by reducing the pump price of petrol from N142 to N97 per litre during his nationwide broadcast yesterday, Kano youths in their thousands trooped out en-masse to continue the protest on Zaria Road, with majority of them displaying placards, one of which reads: 'Revolution is the solution.'While the protest, organised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) and civil liberty groups lasted, in defiance of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) sit-at-home directive, a police helicopter hovered around the venue, ostensibly to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the peaceful protest.Besides the helicopter, there was a huge presence of security personnel, comprising regular and mobile policemen, as well as Civil Defence Corps members and Hisbah Guards keeping watch over the protesters.
