Published by Tribune on Wed, 18 Jan 2012

Residents of Abule Iroko, a boundary community in Iroko Ijaye Local Government Area of Lagos State have called on the state government to boost security in the area, as armed robbery is becoming a daily occurrence in the area.Community News learnt that some miscreants have been tormenting the residents of the area in the last one month. The miscreants, Community News gathered raid from house to house, dispossessing people of their belongings in the night.Community News learnt that the criminals usually storm the community around 9:00 p.m. when residents were returning to their houses. Some of the residents who spoke with Community News under condition of anonymity, lamented that the current hardship occasioned by the recent fuel subsidy removal could be responsible for the upsurge in the activities of the robbers. 'It has not been easy for us since December. We received these unwanted visitors throughout December. The situation forced the residents to be keeping vigil. But, now the situation is still worse. They now raid people on daily basis.'We appeal to the state government to help us beef up security in this area to curb the menace of these devilish people. On our part, we have cleared all the bushes around this place as demanded by the security operatives. Also, we are appealing to the state government to provide street light to illuminate the area. One thing we have discovered is that these men often capitalise on the darkness in the area to carry out their devilish act.'Community News learnt that about 50 people living in the community have lost valuables including money, handsets, gold, among others to the robbers.
