Boom in sachet water business as water scarcity hits Abeokuta

Published by Tribune on Wed, 18 Jan 2012

Sellers of sachet water in Abeokuta are recording a boom due to the scarcity of water in Ogun State capital. It was reported that most residents have resorted to the use of sachet water to cook, bath and for other domestic chores.Community News learnt that the situation has increased the demand for sachet water and consquently the price. Some residents, who spoke to Community News attributed the development to the inability of staff of Ogun Water Board to function, due to the sit-at-home strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Mrs Adeola Adeyemi, a trader, said, ``I now buy pure water at N10 per sachet instead of N5.``I use almost three bags per day out of which I bath my children and carry out other domestic activities.''Another resident, Mr Tunde Adigun, described the situation as worrisome and appealed for urgent interventions of the state government adding that he spent a fortune to buy water on daily basis.``I buy sachet water because I have the money to do so, many people can't afford it and they resort to stream water, you and I know what can happen to them,'' Adigun said. Mr Shola Abidapo, another resident, made a passionate appeal to NLC to allow the staff on essential services to perform their duties.
