Enugu LG bosses promise better performance

Published by Tribune on Thu, 19 Jan 2012

THE Enugu Chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has promised to make local government administration in Enugu State the best and most effective in Nigeria, saying its members will spare no efforts to attain the objective. The newly elected chairman of the body, Ozo Nwabueze Okafor, stated this shortly after the election of a new executive for the chapter, saying the move was the best way to justify the financial and administrative autonomy the local governments have been enjoying since the inception of the Sullivan Chime administration in the state. He said that such unfaltering cooperation and commitment from the governor required that the councils would have no excuse for not surpassing their contemporaries elsewhere in terms of provision of amenities required to bring about rapid and sustainable development to the rural areas of the state.Noting that that the collaboration between the councils and the state government had already led to an unprecedented pace of development in all sectors of the economy in the rural areas, Ozo Okafor, who is also the Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Council, said it was the duty of ALGON to ensure that the momentum was sustained.Other members of the new executive were unanimously elected at the exercise conducted by the Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Dr Bonnie Eneh. They included Chief Gab Onuzuluike, Barrister Tony Ugwu, Barrister Ekene Okenwa, Dr Godwin Abonyi and Barrister Emeka Ozoagu who emerged as Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer and Legal Adviser, respectively.Others were Barrister Emeka Edeh, Prince Cornelius Nnaji, Hon. Festus Nnaji, Hon. Festus Ozioko, Hon. Mathias Nnanna Nze, Mr Festus Ozoemena and Hon. Christopher Nwobodo who were elected Assistant Secretary, Director of Socials, Welfare Officer, Provost, Financial Secretary and Auditor respectively.Addressing the new officers, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Prince Okey Ani, thanked the council chairmen for the maturity exhibited during the election and expressed the confidence of the state government in their ability to live up to their responsibilities.
