FIRS pledges sponsorship for President's Inter-School debate

Published by Guardian on Thu, 19 Jan 2012

THE Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Dr. Ifueko Omoigui Okauru has pledged FIRS' continuous support for the annual President's Inter-Secondary School Debate Competition.Speaking at the grand finale of the competition held at the Community Hall of Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture in Abuja recently, Ifueko said: The reason why I approve of this sponsorship is not because FIRS has some money to throw around, nor because your proposal is beautifully packaged. I consented to this because of my belief in the need for us to promote literacy and the culture of dialogue, especially in our younger ones.'The National Coordinator of the competition, which debuted last year, Mr. Dare Oritu, noted that participating schools would no longer need to register. 'With this arrangement, the cost of registration, transportation and accommodation, which was usually borne by the participating states, has been taking over by the FIRS sponsorship. FIRS has made a big difference and we are happy.'The FIRS sponsorship also entails cash awards, in the sums of N300, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000, awarded to Ebonyi, Delta and Gombe states, which won the first, second and third positions respectively.Coaches of the 16 teams also received N20, 000 each, while the 12 students from the three winning schools all received personalised HP laptops.
