London 2012 Olympics: Nigeria to participate in 6 events - Minister

Published by Tribune on Mon, 23 Jan 2012

NIGERIA will participate in only six sporting events in London Olympics. Speaking with journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said that a committee had been set up to identify the six sports, stressing that the era of wastages was over."We have set up a committee that will come up with six key sports, instead of supporting 13 or more that Nigeria will not likely do well", he said. The minister also said that the era of jamboree participation at the Olympics would not be tolerated, adding that only the officials that have direct bearing to the Olympic will attend."We cannot continue to ask Nigerians to make sacrifices while government officials live a life of profligacy. People and officials who have direct bearing will be in Olympics, not the usual jamboree. In this olympic, we will do what is the best option for Nigeria. We will go to London Wednesday to inspect the facilities and assess level of preparedness for the Olympics," he said."When we are not ready, we are not ready, then we should go back to the drawing board", he said. The minister also assured that the federal government would obey the court order on NFF even, as he lamented that the judgement had thrown sports in Nigeria into a serious mess. The minister said he would get the full details and its implications from the relevant officials of the ministry this week, saying, "It is sad that the whole sports in Nigeria is in a total mess.I can't remember since I started watching football when the nation's cup was held without Nigeria. But let me assure you that I will do the right thing, without fear or favour. I will ensure that the right thing is done, we will obey the court order"
