18 dead as bus collides with trailer at Ore

Eighteen persons were killed in a fatal motor accident that oocurred on Sagamu-Benin expressway on Monday.Residents of the nearby communities and travellers wept uncontrollably as they watched the victims burn beyond recognition.The accident involved a trailer and a commercial bus with all occupants of the passenger bus burnt to death following their vehicle's head-on collision with a trailer.An eyewitness said the accident occurred at about 2.30p.m. when the driver of the commercial bus, which belonged to a private company, marked Lagos XK 501 EKY collided with the trailer with registration number Delta XN 563 KWL.The bus was said to be coming from Lagos and heading towards Ore while the trailer was coming from the opposite direction.The driver of the bus was said to have abandoned his route and drove against the traffic in order to avoid a traffic build-up and in the process, collided with the trailer which was on top speed around Step Down area in Owo.The bus caught fire after the collision. The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ondo State command, Mr Adeniran Aremu, who confirmed the incident, said the driver of the commercial bus drove against traffic.Also,the Sector Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Mr John Meheux, said the four persons that survived, had been rushed to the General Hospital, Ore for treatment.He also said the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of the hospital.Meheux, who lamented the development, said despite the extensive campaigns he led his men to carry out for drivers plying major highways in the state from September to December last year, drivers still drive recklessly. He advised drivers to ensure that they do proper checking of their vehicles daily before they put them on the roads and be mindful of other road users.
