Nigeria at the crossroads ''Ayorinde

Published by Tribune on Tue, 24 Jan 2012

NIGERIA is at the crossroads for getting married to misadministration, misinformation, misdirection and misguidedness. This assertion was made in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Monday, by Elder Taiye Ayorinde, Baale of Ekotedo, in a press statement.According to him, the four vices were caused by the chains of expensive administrative bethroal agents called ministers, permanent secretaries, directors and special advisers.Elder Ayorinde remarked that it was high time to re-examine the cost of governance which escalates astronomically daily in a country whose population equally got bloated up every month, even though the figures of our census were subject to suspect. He stated that President Goodluck Jonathan was confronted with many battles on various fronts, such as industrial action, menace of Boko Haram, provision of infrastructure, dishonesty, corruption in high places and acidic indiscipline among leaders. He observed that government was offering to find solutions to unexplored and unsolved problems without resolving the question of when, what, where, and who among others.Elder Ayorinde suggested a review of the mode of payment of pension to retirees to avoid a situation where pensioners entitlements were used to beef up the private accounts of civil servants, who already earn high income. He said it was a known fact that many pensioners had died when queuing for their pensions using the current system.'Where pensioners receive their hard earned money from the last place they worked just like what NTA does, the salaries of current officers get paid at the same time those of pensioners are paid. Dead officers are known since members of their family will produce death certificates to claim the last salary,' he said.He said Nigeria must tap from the vault of the global humanitarian funding foundations, which were devoid of unnecessary bottlenecks but very strict on how such funds were disbursed.Elder Ayorinde said transparency would be the order of the day when auditing/accounting organisations such as KPMG and Price Water House were at the helm of the scrutiny of spending. He said it would be difficult for any money to filter into the picket of vagabonds and pen-robbers if such organisations scrutinised spending. The Baale of Ekotedo said Humanitarian Project Funding was meantfor developing African countries and not for countries like Italy or Spain. The funds are meant for Africa and not developed countries, he said.
