CBCN commends Jonathan for resolving fuel subsidy issue

THE Catholic Bish-ops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for resolving the fuel subsidy issue amicably.The commendation was contained in a statement signed by the Archbishop of Ibadan and President, CBCN, Father Ade Job.He said that, 'all sides have made their case and our country and its democracy are the richer for it, Nigerians have had a chance to make their case and we are convinced that the president meant well in his initiative.'Father Job also added that corruption had denied Nigerians the chance of building virile and united nation and that the fuel subsidy removal was a strike aimed at the roots of corruption.He, therefore, advised that the national and state assemblies should check the spread.'The courageous move of Mr President to cut salaries of elected officers and political appointees by 25 per cent is an action in the right direction, but we think it is not enough. We think this time, Mr President can cut corruption from the roots by ordering massive cuts in the fringe benefits that are even above the salaries.'Democracy is based on the principle of the supremacy of the common good,' he stressed.
