Bayelsa: CAP plots to hit PDP at the jugular

Published by Guardian on Wed, 25 Jan 2012

THE Change Advocacy Party (CAP) has vowed to surprise the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the governorship polls billed for next month. The governorship candidate of the CAP, Dr Imoro Kubor, said that with the unending in-fighting in the PDP in Bayelsa, it is unlikely that the party will be up and running in the polls. He said that the crisis in the party has made PDP vulnerable and 'we will take advantage.'Kubor said that in the meantime, 'I intend to go to all the local councils and talk with the people. I will also send people to the grassroots to go and campaign. I'm also talking with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to submit the names of agents and those who will go and defend our votes.'We are looking at lots of groups, so many groups are now coming to us and people are now going from door-to-door. We have our programs and posters. We have taken them to different corners of Bayelsa. We are also praying to God that there should be peace during the election. Generally, we are working towards a breakthrough in the election.'Meanwhile, the PDP candidate Seriaki Dickson said that despite the crisis in the state party, 'we have strategies on for the governorship election. With our slogan 'ward-to-ward' reach-out programme, we are urging supporters not to allow anyone provoke them into violence and bloodshed.'According to his campaign organisation, the campaign plan, in a statement issued yesterday, and signed by its Director of Publicity, Boyelayefa Debekeme, will compose of open rallies and will involve ward-to-ward community-based campaign in the eight councils. This, he said 'hopefully will take the candidates and the party's programmes to the people.'The Guardian learnt that the decision to adopt the campaign plan was reached at an enlarged PDP stakeholders meeting held on Monday in Yenagoa and attended by the Chairman of the Campaign Committee Caucus and former Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Timi Alaibe as well as the former Governor of the state, Chief Dieprieye Solomon Alamieyeseigha. In the campaign plan, the campaign would kick-off on January 25 in the Yenagoa council. From there, the campaign train will move to Sagbama and Kolokuma/Opokuma councils. In that order, the PDP campaign activities will then move to Ogbia council on Friday 27, while it would be the turn of the Ekeremor council on January 28. The campaign in Brass council is slated for January 30 while the train moves to Nembe council on January 31 and will terminate in the Southern Ijaw council on February 6.Speaking at the end of the meeting, the Campaign Director, Chief Fred Agbedi, said the robust programme approved by the stakeholders and campaign committee caucus would further endear the PDP to the people of the state to win the governorship election, 'we have adopted the winning and victory strategy. And we have the capacity to mobilise to win this election. The only party with the capacity is PDP; the only party that the people trust in Bayelsa is PDP. The only party that the people in Bayelsa will vote is PDP and the only party that has provided dividends of democracy in the past one decade is PDP.'The Director of Publicity of the PDP Guber Campaign Organisation, Boyelayefa Debekeme, said the party had earlier embarked on the ward-to-ward visit with the candidate in preparation for the campaign proper. 'I appeal to the people of Bayelsa to come out en mass to vote for the PDP come February 11.
