Kudos to Senate President David Mark

Published by Nigerian Compass on Thu, 26 Jan 2012

The strike action embarked upon by Nigerian Labour Congress, to protest the recent removal of petroleum subsidy in the country, has shown the concern of most Nigerians about the harsh realities many of us are facing. This is in light of the high inflation in the country.Nigerians in their millions came out to joinorganised labour to ensure the federal government sees reason in reverting to the old price. The role played by a cross- section of Nigeria, must not go unnoticed; to ensure that government responds positivelyand revertsto N65 or reduce the amount to reasonable price that would be acceptable to millions of Nigerian.Senate President, David Mark's role in ensuring the impasse is nipped in the bud, should be commended. His quick intervention with the Speaker of House of the Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal added pressureon government to insureit brings down the price of petrol. Regardless, of the government back-stepping, many Nigerians were left in such unpalatable situation on the way forward. However we must salute the courage of Senator David Mark, for using his wealth of maturity and experience to shuttle between the Aso Rock andhis residence in the wee hours to make sure labor and the Federal Government come to the round table to ensure Nigerians go about their normal business. His intervention quickened the pace to help the return normality.Another major breakthrough is the ongoing probe by the House of Representatives on the fuel subsidy. The shocking revelations from the petroleum ministry and its agencies has shown that all is not well with the way our natural resources and common wealth which God has given us, but which some few individuals stealfor their selfish interests. We must commend all those who see to the endof these inhuman policies that would all-ways be resisted by all segments of Nigeria, as witnessed by the last protest. This role model by the Senate President, David Mark, is clear indication that some of highly placed personalities whom we elect to represent us at the National Assembly, also identifies with the way downtrodden insociety feel.
