AFN appoints Ogunkoya, Emedolu, others as coaches

THE Athletics Federation o Nigeria (AFN) has resolved to reposition itself and return the country to its place in world athletics, and, has decided to appoint zonal coaches to head the six geopolitical zones of the country with a head coach in Abuja.President of the Federation Chief Solomon Ogba said the coaches are mostly former athletes.They include North West ' Ado Maude (Kano), Charles Yayock (Kaduna), North East- Mohammed Kolo (Maiduguri), Grace Ishaku (Bauchi), North Central- Steve Nuhu (Jos) and Olu Sule (Abuja).Others are South West- Falilat Ogunkoya (Ijebu Ode), Yusuf Alli (Lagos), South East- Tom Uwakwe (Owerri), Uchenna Emedolu (Enugu) and South-South ' Gabriel Okon (Port Harcourt) and Tony Osheku (Oghara). Chief Ogba further revealed that 45 Nigerian athletes have qualified for the 2012 London Olympics Games.These include 24 relay team qualifications and 19 individual qualifications.The breakdown of the qualifiers include all the relay events 4x100m (men and women),4x400m(men and women), 100m (women), 200m (women), 100m (men) and 200m (men), 400 m hurdles (women), Long jump (women), High Jump (women), triple jump (men), 400m hurdles (men), 100m and 110m (hurdles).The former Delta State Commissioner for Sports said with the standard being displayed by the athletes, there isevery possibility that track and field can make the 80 % of the total Nigerian contingent to the Olympic games.
